Identity Standards

The FNPS name, logo, and mission statement form the core of how FNPS identifies and describes itself to the world at large.  FNPS, its chapters, and anyone intending to use or publish materials developed by FNPS must comply with the identity standards herein.

FNPS Logo

The logos of the Florida Native Plant Society are FNPS copyrighted and may only be used by those who adhere to the rules below or who have received prior written permission from FNPS for a specific use. This permission is usually granted based on a shared initiative or special relationship, and requires a specific FNPS approval. Uses in conflict with the guidance below require specific permission and will only be granted for specific, society-approved uses.

Allowable Uses

  • The FNPS logo can be used on any FNPS chapter webpage or printed product such as but not limited to newsletter, t-shirt, plant tag, or display.
  • The FNPS logo can be used by FNPS committees in support of their work.
  • The FNPS logo can be used by non-FNPS entities to represent our organization in a positive manner. Any use of the FNPS logo on a non-FNPS website must embed a link to the FNPS website: https://www.fnps.org

Uses That Are Not Allowed

  • The FNPS logo cannot be used by any third party to imply FNPS endorsement without the express permission of FNPS.
  • The FNPS logo cannot be used by any third party to imply that that party is in any way connected to FNPS without express permission of FNPS.
  • The FNPS logo cannot be used to defame FNPS, its name, its mission, or its actions.

Logo Use Rules

  • Use only logo files downloaded from the FNPS web site or received directly from FNPS. Do not recreate the logo.
  • The logo may not be altered, modified, or obscured in any way. Colors are not to be changed. It must be used without disturbing or distorting its proportions or otherwise altering the impression it creates.
  • Background colors or patterns should never show through interior of the logo.
  • The logo must stand on its own as a distinct graphic element. It should stand out from the background.
  • Please start with the logo version created for the designated application/medium. Choose the most appropriate size logo for your project.
  • Resize the logo only in its entirety so that it is always legible, clear, and without distortion.
  • Raster versions of the logo should only be decreased in size, not increased. The vector version can be increased in size.
  • When used online, the logo must include a hyperlink to http://www.fnps.org.
  • Black and white and gray scale versions of the logo should be used only when the color version cannot be used.

Logo downloads

Logos can be found on the FNPS website at https://www.fnps.org/society/logos.  Users are strongly encouraged to use logo formats that are adequate in resolution and quality for the intended use.  If in doubt, please contact FNPS.

Mission Statement

The mission of the Florida Native Plant Society is to promote the preservation, conservation, and restoration of the native plants and native plant communities of Florida.

For uses where the statement above is too long or not suited to sentence form, a short alternative can be used as follows:

Preserving, conserving, and restoring the native plants and native plant communities of Florida.

FNPS currently uses the short form on stationary and business cards.

Contact Information for FNPS and Its Chapters

FNPS and its chapters maintain postal addresses, email addresses, and contact phone numbers.

Printed publications must contain the relevant postal address, email address(es), and contact phone number which must be consistent with any governmental requirements and society and/or chapter bylaws, as appropriate.

Formal email communications for FNPS must contain

  1. Name of sender
  2. Position/title within FNPS
  3. Society name fully spelled out
  4. Contact information for the sender, including email address and contact telephone number.  If appropriate, it should include the postal address for the Society.
  5. FNPS logo.  The logo should be sized so that it does not pixelate in common email programs.
  6. For mass emails, an unsubscribe link must be included (this is a legal requirement)

It is strongly recommended that these be in the form of a standardized email signature.

Formal email communications for FNPS chapters must contain:

  1. Name of sender
  2. Chapter position/title
  3. Chapter name
  4. Contact information for the sender, including email address and contact telephone number.  If appropriate, it should include the postal address for the chapter.
  5. Chapter logo if one exists.  Use of the FNPS logo is encouraged.  The FNPS logo should be of adequate size and quality to not pixelate in common email programs.
  6. For mass emails, an unsubscribe link (this is a legal requirement -- the unsubscribe can be an email link)

Web Sites

Web sites are official publications of FNPS and its chapters.  As such, they need to clearly identify themselves as belonging to FNPS or one of its chapters.  These include this handbook, the forum, and the Council of Chapters website.  Each site should include the following

  • Site name that clearly defines the site (such as a chapter name)
  • For chapter sites, a clear link to the FNPS website:  https://fnps.org
  • For chapter sites and the main FNPS website, links for joins and donations.  For chapters, these should be the same links that are on the FNPS website.
  • For the main FNPS site and chapter sites, important contacts as relevant to the Society or the relevant chapter.
  • The FNPS logo.  For chapters, this would typically be in a side bar or the site footer.
  • A copyright notice.  This is important to protect the ownership of any materials or images donated for use on the site by members.

Social Media

Social media is a diverse array of programs each with its own criteria for logos and contact information.  No one standard applies to all, and neither FNPS nor its chapters control what any specific social media site allows.

To the extent possible, any site belonging to FNPS or its chapters should contain:

  • The name of the organization (Florida Native Plant Society) or chapter (XX Chapter of the Florida Native Plant Society)
  • If possible a contact email (note -- do not make this a personal email address)
  • A link to the FNPS website or chapter website, as appropriate
  • If allowed, links to the FNPS join and donate pages
  • If allowed, the FNPS or chapter logo.  For the FNPS logo, it should not be altered or cropped such that the full logo does not display.  The logo should be of appropriate resolution to not pixelate.

Solicitation Language

The language that follows must be included on any receipt or printed confirmation of a donation, including membership for any Florida charitable organization.  This applies to FNPS and any chapter within the FNPS Gel.  Any chapter that is not part of the FNPS GEL but which is registered with the State of Florida as a 501 (c) (3) must have comparable language.  Any chapter that is not part of the FNPS GEL and not a 501 (c) (3) should not use this language.

The Florida Native Plant Society, Inc. (FNPS), is a charity recognized as tax-exempt by the IRS under Section 501(c)(3).  FNPS is registered as a charitable organization with the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services (CH 3021).   A COPY OF THE OFFICIAL REGISTRATION AND FINANCIAL INFORMATION MAY BE OBTAINED FROM THE DIVISION OF CONSUMER SERVICES BY CALLING TOLL-FREE WITHIN THE STATE (1-800-HELP-FLA or 1-800-435-7352) or (850) 410-3800 CALLING FROM OUTSIDE OF FLORIDA.
